What is PR?

Put simply, public relations (also known as PR) is using the media to carry positive stories about your business. Are you launching a new product? Is there something unusual about your business? Are you part of an interesting collaboration? These are just some examples of what might be deemed “newsworthy” about your business. The next step is to write a press release to distribute to local news outlets.

How can PR help my business?

As a small business owner, the biggest challenge is often letting people know about what you do. PR is a great way of marketing your business for free. If you’re on a tight budget, it’s worth investing a bit of time in writing a press release. If a media outlet decides to publish it, you can get free publicity for you and your business.

It’s also less sales-like than an ad, so you can engage people more with your business without it being a really obvious sales pitch. If you can write an interesting story about some aspect of your business, a media outlet is more likely to publish it because it is something their readers will enjoy reading. But in the process you’re getting your brand out there and in front of the eyes of more people.

It can be daunting to write a press release for the first time but I think it’s always worth a try. You might strike lucky and if you can get just one media outlet to publish your press release, that’s an achievement. And it’s free!
